Best Soccer Team In The World – Top 10 Ranked

Published on:

The best soccer team in the world is a topic that is highly debated. Some clubs have dominated the sport for decades and others are finding new success in recent times.

As a current college player, I’ve been following the sport for over 20 years. Currently, I’m well aware of which teams are the best in the world and competing for the biggest titles.

Different factors define a team as being the best. I will be focusing on European teams primarily in England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France. These five countries have the best leagues in the world.

So in this article, we are going to cover the current top ten best soccer teams.

Key Takeaways

What makes a team the best? The best teams win and they win a lot. They display their dominance throughout the season and have the trophies to back it up.

The UEFA Champions League crowns the champion of Europe each year and is a good indicator of who is the best club in soccer.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t other factors that affect how good a team is. The placement in their league and how many domestic trophies are won can also influence their success.

This list is based on recent success only.

10- Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund is a club with a rich history and a passionate fan base. They have seen much success and some heart-wrenching failures. To conclude last season’s campaign they failed to win their last game of the season. This made them fall short of Bayern Munich in the race for the Bundesliga title.

They have been runner-ups to Bayern Munich nearly every year over the past decade. More recently, Dortmund has sold the likes of Jude Bellingham and Erling Halaand for large sums. These two are the best in the world in their respective positions. Dortmund had a dominant run in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) before losing to Chelsea FC in the round of 16.

9- Paris Saint-German (PSG)

PSG has one of the most valuable squads in the world featuring Kylian Mbappe. They are a team that has one primary goal, to win the UCL. They fell short of that goal last year losing in the round of 16.

Paris Saint-German is looking to rebuild with a younger and more fresh squad that can get them back to their hopes of winning the UCL. Lionel Messi and Neymar are key departures that led to a rebuild.

They have solidified their position on the list with their ongoing dominance in the French Ligue 1. They display an intriguing style of play that promotes creativity in the attacking third. They often get criticized for their lack of defensive stability.

8- Napoli

Napoli has made their presence known in Italy by winning the Serie A league. Beating out teams such as AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus last year, they have solidified their spot on this list. They compete at a very high level reaching the quarter finals in the 2022-2023 UCL.

Led by Osimhan and Kvaratskhelia, the squad has been esteemed as one of the best clubs in the world. They regularly finish in the top 4 in Serie A. Their upcoming talent and momentum from 2023 will be a big factor in their continued success.

7- Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are unique because their ownership doesn’t provide the team with an influx of new signings. They are very conservative in their spending money. Liverpool produces remarkable results against the world’s best teams with lower budgets.

They missed out on the top 4 in the 2022-2023 Premier League season. Virgil Van Dijk and Mo Salah have been criticized for their overall performances. Salah still scored 19 goals in the premier league. If this is Salah ‘underperforming’ it’s not far-fetched to think that they can compete for a league title when he is performing. Liverpool have been rebuilding their midfield by making notable signings in Alexis Mac Allister.

6- Inter Milan

The future is looking bright for Inter Milan after they made it to the UCL final in 2023 against Manchester City. Even though they lost, they proved that they can compete with Europe’s best.

Lautaro Martinez causes havoc on defenses with his creative and aggressive attacking style. The veteran Chilean, Alexis Sanchez, is looking to revamp his career and help them to a promising 2023-2024 Serie A campaign.

They beat AC Milan in the semi-finals of the UCL and lost 5-1 in league play this year. Inter is asserting itself as the dominant side in the world’s most iconic rivalry.

5- Barcelona

Barcelona has endured some difficult times since Lionel Messi left in 2021. Xavi Hernandez has brought Barcelona back to their “Tiki-Taka” roots by winning the 2022-2023 La Liga season. They beat Real Madrid by a fair amount of points and are showing signs of going far in the 2023-2024 UCL.

Barcelona has the best academy in the world. “La Masia” produces top-tier talent that regularly makes appearances on the first team at young ages. The likes of Pedri and Gavi are two products of the academy that have proved their talent for club and country. They often get compared to Xavi and Iniesta from their prime Barcelona days. Only time will tell if they can fill those shoes.

4- Arsenal

Arsenal are the big talking point in the Premier League right now. They were the only team to challenge Manchester City for the league title last year. Arsenal are a team with ambitious goals to win the Premier League and UCL. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, was heavily criticized at the beginning of his managerial role for not being the right man for the job. Now the Gunners fanbase is supporting him and team morale is up. Arsenal plays a refreshing new style of soccer that emphasizes quick transitions to catch opponents off guard.

Arsenal finished second in the Premier League. They signed star midfielder Declan Rice to join Martin Odegaard in the midfield. They have their eyes on the UCL and the premier league this year and aren’t unlikely contestants in those competitions.

3- Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich is the top team in Germany winning the Bundesliga on the last matchday for the 2023 title. They are consistently winning games in the UCL or domestic league. They aren’t looking to slow down either with star signings such as Harry Kane. Tomas Tuchel was the manager of the German rivals Borrusia Dortmund before coaching in France and England. He won the UCL with Chelsea in 2021.

Bayern lost in the quarter-finals to end their run early in the UCL. Much like PSG, Bayern determines their success by how they compete in the UCL. By their high standards, they will be disappointed by their previous run and looking to win it in 2024.

2- Real Madrid

Real Madrid are perhaps the most notorious club in soccer history. Winning more UCL than any other team. They are European giants. Coached by Ancelotti and led by Luka Modric they fell short of their team goals last year. Losing in the semi-finals to Manchester City and taking second in La Liga to Barcelona.

The club owners realized the need to adapt to the threats found in Barcelona and Manchester City. They signed Jude Bellingham who has been firing on all cylinders and averaging a goal per game. Bellingham with Vinicious Jr. up top is turning out to be a deadly duo. The squad is fairly young with a good foundation of the world’s best upcoming players.

1- Manchester City

Deriving from an impressive rebuild in the late 2000s, Manchester City won the treble last year. The treble consists of the domestic league title, the UCL title, and the domestic tournament title. Only the best teams in the history of the sport have achieved this such as Manchester United in 1999 and Barcelona in 2009.

Manchester City signed Erling Halaand from Borussia Dortmund. He is perhaps the biggest signing in recent Premier League history. Halaand scored 36 goals in the 2023 season which broke the premier league record by a single player. Manchester City won the long-desired UCL title beating Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan in the process. Pep Guardiola is the best manager the world has ever seen and enforces a possession style of play that passes teams to death.
